National Mining Museum Scotland

Museum | Dalkeith | Scotland | United Kingdom

The National Mining Museum Scotland in Dalkeith is located in the restored Lady Victoria Colliery and is a fascinating museum that explores the history of coal mining in Scotland. The museum provides a comprehensive insight into the development of coal mines in the region and their significant role in Scottish economy and industrial history.

A central highlight of the museum is the Lady Victoria Colliery, which opened in 1895 and was the largest coal mine in Scotland at the time. It remained in operation until 1981 and today serves as one of the best-preserved Victorian mines in Europe. Visitors can explore the well-preserved site and machinery rooms, and learn about how mining was organized back then. The challenges and dangers of mining are also addressed, as well as the lives of the workers and their families.

The museum displays an impressive collection of exhibits, including historical tools, machinery, uniforms, and documents that illustrate the evolution of mining from its early days to modern practices. Of particular interest is the portrayal of the daily work and social conditions in coal mining, ranging from mechanical innovations to the miners' living conditions.

The National Mining Museum Scotland is also an active educational center, offering workshops, events, and exhibitions that expand knowledge about mining and its significance to Scotland. It provides an interactive experience for both adults and children, helping to preserve the cultural heritage of the region.

Incredible site of a time that's past. Friendly reception, nice little cafe, fantastic knowledgeable guides. It's really worth asking questions, although the history and facts can be a bit uncomfortable you should know what life was really like, the was a time the price of coal was the health and life's of men, women and children.

Had an excellent visit at this museum - staff were so helpful, knowledgeable & were brilliant with my 2 boys who both have additional needs. They have sensory packs to borrow & the guides answered all their questions & made this place such an interesting place to discover. Would recommend!

Excellent day out, really informative and interesting. The tour from Jim (a retired miner) was the highlight, a great way to really understand the site with someone who really knew what he was talking about. The displays were excellent too, as was the cafe.

What a fantastic experience, our tour guide Sinclair was brilliant. We could have listened to his stories of his personal experience's in the mines all day. We did not want the tour to end. We would highly recommend this tour to all, especially the guided tour with Sinclair.

This is something that everyone should really visit, at least once. Only the young may not realise the extent that mining was such a large and important of Scottish social history, over a long period of time. Very gratifying to learn that they do take in lots of school party visits. My visit today (my first) had to be relatively brief, but I intend to return and enjoy a guided tour, to get the "full experience"! Nevertheless, I learned much and the staff were super friendly and helpful.

Been along to their open day during the summer and again for their spooky walk through ghost tour last week! I just love this place! The staff are all amazing. They think of everything at these events. We have done the daytime tour and also been along to the cafe. Food is yummy. Just love the place really.

All of us loved it. Very knowledgeable tour guide (ex miner) who made us all feel comfortable and made us laugh. B thought he was so funny! And it really makes a diff hearing it from someone who lived it!! I'm sure the lovely gentleman's name was Sinclair but I apologise if I'm incorrect. We spent about 3 or 4hrs here (lost track of time )

This is a superb museum if interested in industrial heritage. I think if you don't take a guided tour you'll miss a great deal - free with your entry ticket. The guides are ex-miners and add a lot of interesting detail that otherwise you would not know. Q&A is encouraged and informal. Thank you Jim for making the visit so special. This is a grade A listed site - a building of national or international architectural or historic importance. It may look a little scruffy but it is meant to depict what it would have looked like the day it closed as a working mine in 1981. I would give your visit around 90 minutes for the guided tour plus at least the same again to look at the two special exhibits covering mining and how it developed over time, including the way miners and families were treated.

Was so excited to go to the mining museum that we both left a little disappointed at the end. We did a self guided tour. We wanted a coffee first but that cafe was not open, for hot beverages which was not stated on the website when booking the tickets. Although being that it was a Wednesday and the cafe only closes on a Monday and Tuesday the lady said that they are waiting for new staff to start, as the previous staff had all gone back to uni. We could still get cold drinks and snacks, but that's not what we were after. The other disappointment was that we never got to see everything there was to see as part of it was closed off to the public due to maintenance work, which once again was not stated on the website on booking tickets. What should of taken us 2-3 hours to do, we were all done in just under an hour and half. The best part was the underground coalface level. Guess we'll be back once it's all open and running properly next year.

Visit as wife had family working as miners. Reception staff on arrival polite and showed us what we needed to do for tour. Sinclair our guide was excellent. Knowledge answered all questions as ex miner himself. A credit to the museum. Most enjoyable

We were taken on the tour by ex miner Dave, he made it very enjoyable with his knowledge and wit. It is well worth a visit, we found out things about the mining industry that we had no idea of.

What a great experience we had today! The tour and specifically the tour guide were excellent. I would definitely recommend it because you would miss so much just by walking around yourself. Great for kids as well to interact and learn about the history of children the same age working in the pits. Thanks so much to the tour guide for his knowledge and information and for going out of his way to bring sweets out to the kids for finding all the cats 😃

A very informative and well organised history of Scottish mining. Being in the mine headings was very evocative of the hard working life people led. I would definitely recommend this museum. For us it was made all the more poignant because one of our grandfather's was a Lanarkshire coalface miner in the 1950s. He died of pneumoconiosis from inhaling coal dust.
